ArisiaBowl - my first tourneyBy Luke at 01/28/2008 - 15:03
Arisiabowl was last weekend and I faced frigid cold and missed the first half of the Pats game, but managed to make it. Turns out it was a ton of fun, so I'm pleased. The tourney was five games with 7s teams. Starting a regular LRB 5 team, halve the positional limits, replace 11 men on the field with 7 and then build your team with 650k. Additionally, there are additional, smaller fields to choose as your home pitch (Full-size Oz 7s, 2/3 size Regular 7s with 2 LoS and a no-man's land, full length but narrow Street and the 2/3 size Beach which disallows any GFIs). Also, there's a relatively standard progression of skills - 2 before starting, 1 after the first two games, either 2 skills (or a double or a second skill) after the third and one final skill before the last game. I took somewhat front-loaded Dark Elves with 2 Blitzers, 1 Witch Elf, 1 Runner and 3 Linemen. That's 600k and add in 1 ReRoll. For skills, I went with Leader on the Runner and Block on the Witch Elf to start, then a Kicking lineman, Strip Ball and Tackle on the Blitzers and two Block Lineman to finish up. On the whole, I had a good time. I got to play a few new folks and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves immensely. While the turnout was small, it was a good crowd. Out of a field of eight, I came in third. I'm quite pleased with that. As prizes, I managed to pick up a gift certificate to Pandemonium and a pack of WFB dwarves to be converted into yet another 7s team. The finals were decided on a coin toss because Maureen's Snow Troll was one GFI away from scoring the winning goal over Shane's humans but failed the final 2+ and forced the coin toss. It was really quite a finish. Thanks again to Maureen for organizing and congrats on the incredibly close victory. |
